Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were hoping for a slam dunk for their latest business venture.
But their hoop dreams to bring a WNBA team to Nashville have been sidelined, at least for now.
According to Taste of Country, the country music power couple were part of an ownership group that hoped to secure a Music City franchise with an easy lay up. And they weren’t the only big names who wanted to see women’s pro basketball in Nashville.
Former University of Tennessee athletes Peyton Manning and Candace Parker also had skin in the game, as did former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.
But according to ESPN, when three new franchises were awarded, Nashville didn’t make the roster. Instead, Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia will join the WNBA, one per year starting in 2028. By 2030, the WNBA will boast 18 teams in the league.
Tim McGraw & Faith Hill Have Other Powerful Women On Their Mind
While the WNBA’s decision was no doubt a disappointment, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have other powerful women on their mind right now.
Namely, their youngest daughter Audrey McGraw, who is currently touring Europe as Brandi Carlile’s opening act on her “The Lost Time” Tour. Faith and Tim traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark to catch one of Audrey’s shows.
In a post on Tim McGraw’s Instagram account, the singer put up a picture with his wife at an outdoor cafe in Copenhagen. He captioned the photo, “Hangin with my baby in Copenhagen to see @audreymcgraw on tour with the fabulous @brandicarlile“
In the picture, Tim is seen with his hands on a cane. The singer has been struggling with serious back and knee issues for months, requiring a number of surgeries and forcing McGraw to pull out of a concert and a Netflix series about bull riders.
Tim McGraw Helped Found the Music City Rodeo
The WNBA isn’t the only sporting event Tim McGraw was interested in bringing to Nashville.
McGraw is a co-founder of the Music City Rodeo, which hit Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena in late May. It was the city’s first professional rodeo. He also served as Grand Marshal.
Tim headlined the third night of this year’s inaugural rodeo May 31. Reba McEntire headlined the first night and Jelly Roll took the stage on the second night.
Tim’s rodeo performance was his first performance in almost a year, due to his ongoing health battles. And while he was able to successfully perform, he has since pulled out of a planned concert later this month.
The “Live Like You Were Dying” singer was set to headline the inaugural Professional Bull Riders (PBR) “Last Cowboy Standing” competition on July 21 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
But a post on PBR’s Instagram account now says country group Cross Canadian Ragweed will perform in his place. The post reads, “Cross Canadian Ragweed will step in for Tim McGraw as he recovers from back surgery to open the Last Cowboy Standing Show on July 21 in Fort Collins — and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
The post also states, “We’re sending our very best to Tim for a quick recovery and hope to see him at a future PBR event.”
