Sarah Drew Talks On-Set Catastrophe and ‘Mistletoe Murders’ Future

For many fans of “Mistletoe Murders,” November 7 is a date they’ve had marked on their calendar for a while. While revisiting Season 1 when it premiered on the Hallmark Channel was fun, most are ready to dive into Season 2. For the show’s star, Sarah Drew, it’s been a chance to really get to know Emily. She’s also overcome her own behind-the-scenes catastrophe, all the while contemplating the show’s future.

Creative Cinematography Used to Hide Sarah Drew’s Broken Hand

Those who have watched all of Season 1 of “Mistletoe Murders” will recall that Drew wore a cast on her hand for part of the season. Towards the end of Season 2, she broke the same hand, and the crew had to strategically hide it from the cameras.

“I had to shoot the last ten days of the season, well, it was like six full shooting days that I still had to shoot,” Drew told Hallmark Mysteries & More. “But I broke it in the middle of the final block, which was episode five and six. So we shot half of both five and six.”

“There’s a scene where I’m walking up to this restaurant and I have both hands working,” Drew explained. “And then I walk into a kitchen and only one hand works. Then I walk down a hallway, and two hands are working.”

Ever the professional, Drew refused to hold up filming, recalling that she broke it “right before lunch, doing a scene, and I was back on set shooting the next morning at 8:00 am.”

Drew describes Emily as “relentlessly hopeful,” which she says is also “a piece of who I am, for sure.” She and Emily also both “have a deep desire to connect with people. And we see her, at least she’s starting to allow that to happen in her life and in her world.”

“She fights for people that she cares about, for people that are often falsely accused,” she continued. “She wants justice. I think all those ways I’m pretty similar to her.”

The one aspect of Emily’s life Sarah doesn’t share — nor would she want to — is her job. “I wouldn’t own a store for Christmas,” Sarah admitted. “I don’t think I’d ever want to work in retail, if I’m being honest.”

While Hallmark hasn’t greenlit a third season yet, the second season ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the door open. While Drew definitely wants to continue exploring Emily’s background and persona, she could also envision even more for “Mistletoe Murders.”

I think it could very easily be a whole year-round show,” she said. “I mean, especially with Christmas in July, her shop is a Christmas shop that’s open all year round. It could still be ‘Mistletoe Murders,’ but happening in the summer because it’s under the mistletoe in the store. There’s lots of ways to make it work.”
