Hamel, 89, said in an October 2025 interview with Woman’s World that he is “doing okay” after losing his wife two years ago after an impressively long marriage. He went on, “We were together 55 years. We lived together for nine years before we got married.” He romantically added that it was only after meeting Somers that he knew marriage was for him, saying, “Before I met Suzanne, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get married again since I had been divorced previously.”
He then touched on his wife’s illness, revealing the “Nothing Personal” star “dealt with cancer her entire life.” He recalled, “The first time she was diagnosed with cancer I was with her in the changing room at the doctorโs office. I will never forget when the doctor came in and said those three dreaded words, ‘You have cancer.’ At that moment everything came to a halt and it was the only time, we barely spoke to each other.” He says Somers then came up with a solution for how to face the pair’s frightening new reality. She suggested, “Letโs not give it anymore attention because I am going to be okay.” Hamel also praised his wife for her “great attitude” in dealing with the disease.
The Final Days
Hamel vulnerably recalled his final days with Somers as her condition grew more fragile, saying, “When the end was near, Suzanne and I had a lot of conversations. Theย last two nights I was with her, she was non-responsive. I was talking to her non-stopย from 8 p.m. one evening to 5 a.m. the next morning, hoping she could hear me.” He added that he assumed the actress was aware because he noted “her blood pressure was normal.”
He went on to recount how they sweetly shared a final kiss before Somers woke up long enough to tell him, “I donโt want you to mope around. I want you to live your life because you have a great life ahead of you and I donโt want you to walk around all depressed.”
