Erin Napier’s older daughter is already showing signs that she’s inherited her mother’s artistic talent.
The HGTV designer posted a picture on Instagram showing a piece of artwork by her daughter Helen.
The painting is a recreation of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous “Starry Night” as seen through the eyes of a 7-year-old. In the caption, Erin writes, “Copying masterworks was my greatest joy as a little painter, now Helen is giving it a try. Starry Night, by a seven year old. ✨”
Helen and younger sister, 4-year-old Mae’s paintings and drawings fill the walls of Erin and husband Ben Napier’s home in Laurel, Mississippi.
Erin recently gave readers on The Color of Home Substack a peek inside her home, highlighting the artwork scattered throughout. Helen and Mae’s talents are much in evidence.
One picture even shows a light-filled sunroom with two easels set up facing a still life composition.
Erin Napier Shares Her Love of Creating Things With Her Daughters
Erin Napier has always encouraged her daughters to be creative, avoiding screen time and making space for artwork.
But Erin says her secret weapon in drawing out her children’s creativity is actually something you wouldn’t expect: boredom.
On an episode of “The Heirloom” podcast, which is hosted by the Napiers’ friends Jim Rasberry and Josh Nowell, Erin Napier said her mom was always making things with her and encouraged her to be bored.
“Because when I was bored was when I was most creative. Boredom created great things,” said Erin. She told the story of her mom helping her make a tiger costume like the local high school mascot. Erin says, “And that is exactly who Helen is now.”
Erin & Ben Napier Love That Their Daughters Don’t Watch Their Show
In that same podcast, Erin Napier revealed that Helen and Mae are much more interested in painting, playing outside and other activities than they are in watching their mom and dad on HGTV.
Erin said, “Helen and Mae don’t care at all about ‘HOME TOWN.’ They don’t care about it. When I tell you they don’t care about it at all, they don’t even want to tell anyone that’s what we do. Like they don’t want anyone to know about ‘HOME TOWN.’”
Erin was on the podcast with her best friends and the podcast hosts’ wives, Mallorie Rasberry and Emily Nowell.
Erin told her friends that not only do they not watch the show, Helen and Mae would likely hide what their parents do from friends.
Emily Nowell agreed, saying, “I can see Helen being like, it’s career day at school, and it’s like ‘my mom’s an accountant,’ ‘my dad’s a dentist,’ and Helen’s like ‘my parents don’t have jobs, they can’t come,’” she laughed.
Erin chimed in, “She would be like ‘daddy fixes things,’… ‘mommy goes to old houses.’ She would like downplay the whole thing, which I actually love.”
