Izzy Battres is not only handy with tools. He also plays the accordion.
The star of HGTVโs โIzzy Does Itโ took part in a question-and-answer segment called โThe Sitโ with the Fox TV station in Los Angeles, near Battresโs home in Santa Ana, California. A companion piece to a separate report, the session featured an off-screen reporter talking with Battres, who had to chuckle when she mentioned his ability to play the accordion.
As for his go-to selection?
โA little song from Los Tigres del Norte that goes way back,โ Battres said, โbut itโs been a while since I played that one.โ
Izzy Battres Discusses Rewards, Challenges of Working With Family
Battres doesnโt have much time to get the accordion out of its case these days.
The former contractor on Tarek El Moussa and Christina Haackโs original HGTV show, โFlip or Flop,โ Battres is four episodes into the eight-episode premiere season of his own series, which first aired on February 5. Battres has also been on a couple of episodes of โThe Flip Off,โ appearing as a judge on the February 26 show.
โIzzy Does Itโ follows Battres and several family members as they run a home renovation business in Southern California. Itโs a scenario that Battres admitted to the Fox TV station can have its pluses and its minuses.
โThe rewarding aspect is that I get to see my family every day, and the challenging part is I see them every day,โ he said with a laugh. โSo, if thereโs good days, bad days, we canโt leave from each other, and birthday parties can become awkward sometimes.โ
At least Battres said he knows he can always rely on his faith.
โMy faith is everything, so when the storms come, when the floods come, I have an anchor that I can hold onto,โ he said.
Izzy Battres Stresses Importance of Being True to Yourself
Asked about common remodeling mistakes that he has seen from do-it-yourself homeowners, he cautioned against tearing things up without first having a proper design. Battres also stressed the importance of avoiding too many outside opinions about the desing concept.
“You gotta hone down what you want,โ he said. โWhether itโs with your partner, your spouse, whomever it is, youโve gotta define the needs and not wants.โ
As far as any advice he would give to aspiring designers and contractors hoping to launch a TV career, Battres stressed the importance of staying true to what you love to do.
“If you do it well enough, the Scriptures say that youโll be sitting before king,โ he said. โSo hone your craft, do it well, excel at what you love to do.โ
โIzzy Does Itโ airs Wednesday nights on HGTV at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
