CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour’s cancer battle continues.
The 67-year-old journalist revealed to the public that her ovarian cancer has returned for the third time during the Thursday, Oct. 23 episode of “Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story.”
“I have it again. But it’s being very well managed and so this is one of the things that people have to understand about some cancers,” she said. “I obviously had all of the relevant organs removed, but it came back a couple times in a lymph node.”
Amanpour has a rare type of ovarian cancer, Dr. Angela George, who is the clinical director of genomics at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, said on the show, adding that it’s seen in less than 10% of cases.
Amanpour is undergoing immunotherapy, describing it as “the opposite of grueling,” adding that she has had no side effects.
This is the third time she is battling cancer, with doctors having discovered it came back during her routine check-ups every three months. She was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May 2021.
“The fact that I’m monitored all the time is a superb insurance policy,” Amanpour stated.
Christiane Amanpour Reflects on Her Cancer Journey
During her appearance on the show, Amanpour also reflected on her cancer journey, and even got emotional as she discussed the support system around her.
“I never actually asked for help before…and when I did, I got it,” the journalist told Hannah Vaughan Jones. “From my family, my friends, my colleagues, from everybody. And it was touching but it was really helpful, really amazing.”
“It really sustained me because it’s not just the illness, it’s the state of mind,” she added. “And to have all these people who just literally every day were asking me how I was, how they could help…the community is actually vital and I’m just so very lucky that I had that.”
