Beloved Actress Shares Life-Changing Diagnosis: ‘I’m Not Ashamed’

The “Goonies” star Martha Plimpton is the latest addition to the growing list of celebrities who have spoken openly about being diagnosed with ADHD.

On Thursday, Plimpton attended the New York City premiere of “Task,” proudly wearing an ADHD necklace. Speaking with Page Six, the actress opened up about her late diagnosis and the relief she felt upon receiving it.

“I’m actually a late diagnosis ADHD, like millions of others,” Plimpton revealed. “It was actually a huge relief to be diagnosed.”

Plimpton, 54, added that she found out about her life-changing condition when she was “about 50.” Following the diagnosis, things began to make sense for the actress, noting that she’s “not ashamed” and “finally free.”

“So many little things fell into place and made sense that hadn’t made sense before,” she told the outlet. “I’m glad to be sharing my ADHDness with the world.”

Plimpton is one of many celebrities who have candidly discussed their ADHD diagnoses. Most recently, “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland opened up about having ADHD and dyslexia.

In an interview with IGN, the actor admitted that his diagnosis can make taking on a new role “intimidating.”

“I have ADHD and I’m dyslexic, and I find sometimes when someone gives me a blank canvas that it can be slightly intimidating,” Holland told the outlet. “ And sometimes you are met with those challenges when developing a character.”

In 2024, singer Jessie J revealed in an Instagram post that she was diagnosed with ADHD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). In a now-deleted post, she shared how her condition completely changed how she approaches work and relationships.

“I was diagnosed with ADHD and OCD about 3 months ago,” Jessie wrote in part, according to Billboard. “In telling people a lot of the reaction I got was ‘Yeah I mean we knew that’ (which I’m sure some of you are doing right now). And of course I knew to some extent but having a baby has let’s say… exposed it a lot more, which was comforting in a way, as it made it feel less heavy and scary.”

Socialite Paris Hilton also openly talked about her ADHD. In her 2023 memoir, “Paris: The Memoir,” she detailed how it has shaped her into the person she is today.

“It also makes me who I am,” Hilton wrote. “So if I’m going to love my life, I have to love my ADHD. And I do love my life.”

Hilton also penned a column on Teen Vogue titled “Why ADHD Is My Superpower,” released a song and music video called “ADHD,” and supported a campaign for women with ADHD.
