In a playful and unexpected moment following the Oct. 31 performance of “Waiting for Godot” at Broadwayโs Hudson Theatre, Hollywood stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter took their curtain call to the next level: they emerged onto the stage wearing nothing but their underwear and covered in fake blood.
The moment delighted audience members and aligned with director Jamie Lloydโs signature twist on dramatic finales.
Reeves, who made his Broadway debut as Estragon in the production, and Winter, playing Vladimir, surprised fans with the stuntโafter their usual bow, they disappeared backstage and returned with the cheeky reveal.
The โblood-soaked briefโ bow followed tradition from Lloydโs past productions, but fabricating the moment with two major Hollywood actors gave it renewed buzz.
Despite the playful finale, the production itself is receiving critical acclaim.
Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the new version of Samuel Beckettโs existential classic previews began Sept. 13 and officially opened Sept. 28, 2025. The limited run is set to close Jan. 4, 2026.
Fans React
Social media buzzed with praise for the playful twist and for reaffirming that theatre remains a place for surpriseโeven from actors of Reevesโs stature.ย
“Is it really a jamie lloyd production if someone isnโt drenched in blood by the end,” one user wrote.
Another added, “The best Halloween costumes.”
For Reevesโbetter known for action roles in films such as “The Matrix” and the John Wick franchiseโthis unexpected curtain call signals a willingness to lean into theatricality, absurdity and self-awareness.
The moment bridges his serious actor profile with a wink at spectacle. Winter, his longtime โBill & Tedโ co-star, matched the tone, reminding audiences of their comedic roots even in an existential drama.
It’s the First Time Reeves Is on Broadway
The role marks Reeves’ Broadway debut, and Winterโs return for the first time since 1979.
When it was announced, the two issued a joint statement and stated they were both looking forward to the play. “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays,” it read.
The two have known each other for over 35 years as they starred together in the comedy “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”
Their longtime friendship is part of the reason the two were cast in the role.
โ[Director] Jamie [Lloyd] remarked that our friendship, our history together, really suits the play because of the friendship and connection that two characters have,โ Winter told Variety.
