New TV shows seemingly arrive every week.
It’s hard to keep count on what you need to be watching. It’s even harder to pin down where some of the shows live. Which ones will get more seasons? Which ones will have the best payoff? Which ones will TikTok fawn over? Only time (really, trends) will tell.
Below are the shows you should be paying attention to this August.
Chief Of War (Apple TV+, August 1)
Jason Mamoa returns to Apple TV with a show he co-created with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett. “Chief of War” tells the story of four kingdoms in 19th century Hawaii looking for unification. What’s also unique about the show is the two creators co-wrote episodes with Hawaiian language dialogue with archiving and translation company Awaiaulu.
Eyes Of Wakanda (Disney+, August 1)
Continuing their plunge into animation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney is set to release “Eyes of Wakanda” – a female driven show about the Wakandan warriors. Model Winnie Harlow takes center stage in this Phase Six based miniseries that is also set to feature Iron Fist (albeit not the ones from the “Iron Fist” show nor the previous animated show “What If…?”).
King Of The Hill (Season 14, Hulu, August 4)
Return to the world of “King of the Hill” with Hank and company as they navigate through the modern era. Hank and wife Peggy return from working in Saudi Arabia to reconnect with their Arlen, Texas friends. Bobby is a chef; Bill Dautrieve is a shut-in. It’s all very updated. There’ll also be cursing.
Alien: Earth (FX, August 12)
Noah Hawley takes on the “Alien” franchise with a prequel series set before the original film. Sydney Chandler plays the role of the first hybrid human while Timothy Olyphant plays her mentor. There’s also xenomorphs and maybe other alien variants.
Butterfly (Prime Video, August 13)
Daniel Dae Kim stars in a spy thriller with family in mind as the super spy fights his way through Korea trying to keep his also-a-spy daughter safe from villainous Piper Perabo.
Long Story Short (Netflix, August 22)
Coming from “Bojack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, “Long Story Short” is a more personal followup that seemingly doesn’t feature anthropomorphic animals. Not much is known about the show but here’s the synopsis: “A dysfunctional family’s shared history, inside jokes, and old wounds are explored in this adult animated comedy spanning multiple years.”
The Terminal List: Dark Wolf (Prime Video, August 27)
This prequel series to the Chris Pratt starring original features Taylor Kitsch reprising his role while also getting the main focus. This show will tell the story of Kitsch’s turn that ended in season one of “The Terminal List.”
