“General Hospital” fans celebrated with a collective cheer when Drew Cain finally got what he had coming. The Congressman was shot in the back, twice, one at close range, and left to bleed out on his floor. The list of potential suspects will likely include at least a third of all the residents in Port Charles. The soap has launched what will likely be the whodunit of the year, and Cameron Mathison is here for it.
The actor chatted with Soap Opera Digest and shared his thoughts on those spectacular scenes where Drew takes a few bullets.
Cameron Knows That the Audience Hates Drew
ABCCameron Mathison first took over the role of Drew Cain in 2021. At that time, the former Navy SEAL was a great guy. Somewhere along the way, the writers decided to decimate Drew’s character, and perhaps one of the most evil GH villains of all time was born. He has spent the last year trying to expose the Qs while blackmailing nearly everyone he once called a close friend. He also seems to enjoy hurting children if it gets him what he wants.
It comes as no shock that everyone wants Drew dead, and Mathison agrees. โObviously, everybody hates me like crazy, but at the same time, they had to do that for the last four or five months,โ he reasons.
He continues, โThey canโt just have people not like me. They have to have people want to kill me! And in order to have multiple people want to kill you, youโve got to be pretty despicable โ and theyโve done a really good job with that with Drew! Iโve trusted the process and now, itโs become weirdly therapeutic.”
Cameron Welcomes the Challenge of Portraying Drew Cain
ABCโI try to be a really nice human and a good, solid person in my life, and Iโve gone through a lot of big life challenges in a very short stretch of time. Then, I go to work and get to be such a jerk โ itโs almost like my little fantasy escape. I donโt know if itโs good for my psyche or not, but Iโve really leaned into it!
The more I gave into it and really trusted the process and the writers โ I donโt change anything, and I donโt ask to change anything, I just kind of go in and do it โ itโs just become easier and easier. Thatโs maybe a little bit scary, but also really fun!โ
Cameron is having a blast playing a bad guy and is thrilled to be at the center of a whodunit. โIโm super-excited about it. I watched Dallas back in the day, and in many ways, itโs very in line with the โWho Shot JR?โ story. I donโt care if you are the punching bag for all of Port Charles, youโre still the center of the story, and that feels really cool.โ
He also really enjoyed actually filming those scenes where Drew was shot. โItโs not every day that you get to take a gunshot on camera, and I really wanted to get that right and fall hard. And then, from the audience perspective, I knew, โThe viewers are gonna love this!โ They all want to shoot Drew! Everybody wants Drew shot and dead. So I wanted to make sure that I gave them my all.โ
Who do you think shot Drew Cain? Do you want to see the Congressman survive?
