Louisiana Native Makes ‘Swamp’ Music History on ‘The Voice’: WATCH

With a unique twist on a beloved classic tune, Louisiana native Dustin Dale Gaspard had all four judges on “The Voice” turn their chairs after his impressive blind audition, which aired on October 6.

Gaspard put his own New Orleans spin on Sam Cooke’s 1962 hit, “Bring It On Home to Me,” blending Cajun rhythms with soulful R&B. At one point, he even slipped into French, leaving the judges with no reason not to turn their chairs.

Hailing from Cow Island, Louisiana, 33 year old Dustin Dale Gaspard was one of the most impressive singers during another round of blind auditions, which aired on Oct. 6.

Gaspard kicked off his performance by playing his harmonica, immediately capturing the attention of all four judges — Reba McEntire, Michael Bublé, Niall Horan, and Snoop Dogg, who were all very eager to hear more. Then, strumming his guitar, Gaspard began singing Cooke’s beloved song, giving it a unique and soulful twist.

But that wasn’t all. Gaspard then sang a portion of the song in Cajun French, a first for “The Voice.”

McEntire immediately turned her chair around, and the other judges followed suit. It was a well-deserved four-chair turn.

Gaspard Chooses Niall Horan as His Coach

Each of the judges pleaded their case as to why Gaspard should be on their team. However, the singer ultimately chose to go with Horan, who had initially shared, “There’s nothing better than hearing proper, unique, full of character voice when you’re facing away … That was absolutely incredible, the little bit of French, you can sing ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ and it would sound good.”

The former One Direction star added, “I feel like we have a similar music taste, just straight off the bat. Please pick me, I love you.”

Despite not choosing McEntire, she called his voice “refreshing,” while Bublé tried to sway him by speaking French. Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg shared that Gaspard’s music “touched his heart” because he had family in the south.

After Gaspard chose Horan, the pop star shared, “That was one of the best auditions I have ever seen and heard on this show in three seasons.”

According to Parade, Gaspard grew up listening to a diverse collection of genres that included a blend of New Orleans rhythm and blues, mixed with country music and Cajun music, which he called “swamp” music. Music has always been the driving force in his life. “I’ve just been focusing on honing the craft, and the coaches will be able to really break through the ceiling and join the table of success. A chair turn would justify all the sacrifices I’ve made,” he shared.
