Jason Duggar and his wife, Maddie Grace Duggar, are reflecting on the unexpected way their relationship began โ and how starting as friends helped lay the foundation for their marriage.
Jason Duggar Opens Up About His Love Story With Maddie
The couple, who tied the knot in October 2024, joined Jeremy Vuolo and Jinger Duggar Vuolo on The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast to share their love story. Jason, 25, recalled that the two first connected on Instagram and began messaging in late 2023.
โWe messaged each other for probably a week,โ Jason told the hosts on the Aug. 13 episode. โWe FaceTimed at about the week mark.โ
Maddie, 21, admitted she was cautious at first, even turning down Jasonโs invitation to the familyโs New Yearโs Eve party. โI was like, well, I donโt want to look him up,โ she explained. โI donโt want to learn about him through that, but Iโve also seen you on the show, and I was like, Iโm very different from them.โ
How The Duggars Went From Friendship to Romance
Jason shared that, in the beginning, they agreed to keep things platonic. โI just see us as being friends,โ he remembered telling Maddie. โItโs like we put up a front,โ he added, explaining that their long-distance start โ with Maddie in Tennessee and Jason in Arkansas โ made it harder to feel natural.
Maddie revealed she already had feelings for Jason but appreciated the pressure-free friendship phase.
Within days, Jason realized he wanted to be more than friends, with Maddie admitting she was โabout to put a stopโ to their conversations if he didnโt clarify his feelings.
โLord, if this guy doesnโt either say something and go back on it or he doesnโt stop and just really figure out how to just be friends with me, Iโm going to have to say something,โ Maddie remembered praying.
Less than 10 months after they met, the pair exchanged vows, proving that sometimes the best romances are built on a solid friendship.
Jason Duggar is the 12th child of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and initially rose to fame on the TLC reality show “19 Kids and Counting.”
The series premiered in 2008 and ran until 2015, documenting the lives of Jim Bob and Michelle, who are known for their large family of 19 children โ all with names beginning with the letter J. The show was canceled in 2015, followed by a spinoff, “Counting On,” aired from 2015 to 2021.
