Golden Globe-winning actor Rob Lowe appeared onย “Live! with Jimmy Kimmel” on Tuesday, September 16, and spoke about celebrating his 31-year-old son Matthew’s recent engagement and his own deep desire for grandkids.
Matthew Lowe popped the question to his now-fiancรฉe, Emily Markus, this past July, and shared photos of the proposal to Instagram.
“Matthew just got engaged,” Lowe told Kimmel. โVery, very excited about it. Iโm pressuring him already for grandkids.โย
For Lowe, the prospect of potential future grandbabies brings the inevitable question: What exactly will they call him? The 61-year-old actor admitted heโs a little hesitant about adopting the standard title.
โI wouldnโt mind being called grandpa,โ he said, before joking, โbut Iโm not sure America wants โGrandpa Rob Lowe.’โ
Still, he joked with Kimmel, who has a granddaughter of his own, considering whether he might adopt a more playful nickname.
Kimmel responds that America may not be ready to call him that, but his future grandchild will.
Kimmel goes on to joke that maybe Lowe could go by “Gwee Gwee,” in reference to his son’s childhood stuffed frog that the two had just been discussing.
โYou know what? Iโm going to have them call me Gwee Gwee,โ says Lowe with a laugh.
From Hollywood Heartthrob to Hopeful Grandparent
Lowe and his wife, jewelry designer Sheryl Berkoff, share two sons and a marriage of over 30 years.
The proud dad has never been shy about hinting that heโs ready for the next generation of Lowes.
In fact, this isnโt even his first public plea for grandchildren. Back in March, in an interview for “AARP The Magazine,” Lowe admitted heโs been keeping a close eye on his sonsโ love lives.
โI probably take an overly enthusiastic interest in my sonsโ dating because Iโm angling for grandkids,โ he joked. โIt better happen!โ
Rob Lowe Wants to Crowd-Source His Future Grandpa Nickname
Lowe has proved he’s thought a lot about the possibility of having grandkids soon, and that he wants to be prepared even if it doesn’t happen soon.
The actor even suggested to “AARP The Magazine” that readers call into his podcast with possible nicknames for him to take on when the time comes, throwing out the name “Mim,” which he used to call his own grandmother.
โBy the way, thereโs never been a better AARP conversation than this, right?โ he joked. โReally, this is it.โ
Clearly, Hollywoodโs heartthrob is more than ready to swap his leading-man title for โWorldโs Coolest Grandpa.โ
