When Dito Montiel started shooting โRiff Raff,โ he knew it would be unpredictable โ but even he was stunned by what happened when Pete Davidson and Bill Murray shared the screen. The director behind classics starring Channing Tatum and “Boulevard” starring Robin Williams called the experience one of the wildest ensembles heโs ever worked with.
โItโs such a weird movie,โ Montiel said in our interview. โBut itโs got so many people in it that youโd never think would be together. You know, Bill Murray, Ed Harris, Pete Davidson, Jennifer Coolidge โ and somehow it all made sense.โ
Pete Davidson And Bill Murray Changed The Energy Of โRiff Raffโ
In an exclusive interview with EntertainmentNow, Montiel admits he wasnโt sure what to expect when Davidson joined the cast, but he quickly became central to the movieโs rhythm. โPete was surprising,โ Montiel recalled. โYou think you know what youโre going to get, and then he hits you with this totally different energy. Heโs hilarious, but heโs also vulnerable in ways people donโt give him credit for.โ He also added what also surprised him about Davidson, โWhat a good actor he is, you know? Iโm always surprised. I know it sounds corny to have a director talk about how much they love actors, but I do. And when itโs good, Iโm kind of amazed.โ
โThey (Davidson and Murray) probably have that weird connection because of maybe โSaturday Night Liveโ or something like that. But I donโt know, great stuff just seems to blend. If youโre special, youโre special, you know? And both those guys seem pretty special. They seemed to have their own strange connection, aside from whatever they need to have with meโ, said Montiel.
And then there was Bill Murray. โI mean, itโs Bill Murray,โ Montiel said. โHe can just sit there and itโs funny. But at the same time, heโll do something that suddenly breaks your heart. Thatโs what he does โ he can make you laugh and cry in the same beat.โ
What shocked Montiel was how those two energies collided. โYou throw Pete in there, and youโve got Bill doing his thing, and suddenly the scene takes on this life you couldnโt plan. Thatโs what I love โ itโs not in the script, itโs just them. Itโs real.โ
Why โRiff Raffโ Became Montielโs Wildest Film Yet
GettyThe ensemble didnโt stop with Davidson and Murray. Ed Harris, Jennifer Coolidge, and Gabrielle Union rounded out the cast โ each bringing their own unpredictable spark. โJenniferโs incredible,โ Montiel said. โShe can do something where you donโt know whether to laugh or cry, because she flips it on you in a second. And Ed Harris just grounds everything. He walks in and suddenly it feels heavy and real.โ
That combination made โRiff Raffโ unlike anything Montiel had done before. โThe title says it all,โ he said. โItโs about people who donโt belong, or maybe they do, but theyโre a mess. And when you throw them together, you get this crazy story thatโs funny, sad, and kind of beautiful.โ
Montiel described the shoot as chaos โ the kind he thrives on. โYou canโt storyboard that,โ he said. โYou just let them go and you try to catch the moment. With this cast, there was always a moment worth catching.โ
