Fans of “General Hospital” already know that legacy character, Lucky Spencer, is preparing to leave Port Charles again. His portrayer, Jonathan Jackson, is wrapping up a nine-month run on the series, primarily because the commute between the soap’s Los Angeles studio and his home in Tennessee became too much to maintain.
The actor isn’t even offscreen yet, and already there has been talk of a recast, something Jackson himself weighed in on, telling TV Insider, “I understand that if Iโm able to be a benefit for the show, then thatโs great, and if they need to move on from that, then I respect that.โ
Jonathan Jackson Is Grateful to the ‘General Hospital’ Fanbase
GettyJonathan Jackson stepped back into the role in August 2024 and was immediately welcomed by longtime fans. He told TV Insider, โIโm very thankful for their enthusiasm for my return to the show. I apologize for not being able to stay longer. I hope they can understand the life dynamic, but Iโm super grateful for the fans and the loyalty and love. The GH fan base is unlike anything Iโve ever experienced. I donโt take it for granted, and Iโm extremely grateful for all of that support.โ
Jackson first debuted in the role of Luke and Lauraโs son back in 1993 when he was just 11 years old. Jackson has come and gone from the series on a few occasions. And in between his stints, the role of Lucky has been recast with other actors. First, Jacob Young stepped in from 2000-03, and then Greg Vaughan took over until 2009.
Jonathan Jackson Is Hopeful That Lucky Will Not Be Recast Again
While a long-term commute for Jackson didn’t seem to be in the best interest of his family, he is still hopeful about returning in the future to play Lucky Spencer. When asked about the possibility of another Lucky recast, Jackson said, โI donโt really see that happening. I mean, I could be wrong, but on a personal level, I would say, โWell, thatโs too bad.โ As an actor, there are so many things in life that are just out of your hands. Thatโs their decision, but obviously, I would prefer that itโs just left open so that I could hopefully come back and do more work there.”
โThe door is always open from my perspective, so weโll have to see how it goes logistically, and see if thereโs a way to adjust and pivot certain realities, but I would hope that that would be able to happen,” says Jackson.
